Floratam St. Augustine Sod

Product Details

Floratam is a coarse, vigorous variety of St. Augustine grass that was initially released in 1972 by the Florida and Texas A&M Experiment Stations as a SAD (St. Augustine Decline) virus and chinch bug resistant selection. In addition to these qualities Floratam has also since been observed to be brown patch tolerant and drought-tolerant.
  • Thrives in direct sunlight; a minimum of 6 hours per day
  • Most common St. Augustine variety used in Florida lawns
  • Wider and longer leaf blades than common St. Augustine
  • Its stolons are large and purplish-red in color
  • Gets its name as a portmanteau of FLORida and Texas A&M
  • A 4-year drought-resistance study entitled "Comparative Intraspecies and Interspecies Drought Resistance of Six Major Warm-Season Turfgrass Species" performed by researchers at Texas A&M containing 58 grass cultivars (6 different species) concluded that Floratam was the most drought-tolerant of all St. Augustine grasses
  • The study also found that Floratam's rating in terms of its shoot color, turgidity, and uniformity were all excellent
  • Floratam should be mowed at a height of 3"-4" once established
