Floratam St. Augustine Details

Floratam is a coarse, vigorous variety of St. Augustine grass that was initially released in 1972 by the Florida and Texas A&M Experiment Stations as a SAD (St. Augustine Decline) virus and chinch bug resistant selection. In addition to these qualities Floratam has also since been observed to be brown patch tolerant and drought-tolerant.
  • Thrives in direct sunlight; a minimum of 6 hours per day
  • Most common St. Augustine variety used in Florida lawns
  • Wider and longer leaf blades than common St. Augustine
  • Its stolons are large and purplish-red in color
  • Gets its name as a portmanteau of FLORida and Texas A&M
  • A 4-year drought-resistance study entitled "Comparative Intraspecies and Interspecies Drought Resistance of Six Major Warm-Season Turfgrass Species" performed by researchers at Texas A&M containing 58 grass cultivars (6 different species) concluded that Floratam was the most drought-tolerant of all St. Augustine grasses
  • The study also found that Floratam's rating in terms of its shoot color, turgidity, and uniformity were all excellent
  • Floratam should be mowed at a height of 3"-4" once established

Floratam St. Augustine sod is one of the three species of the St Augustine grass. When compared to Raleigh and Palmetto which are the other species of the St. Augustine sod, Floratam more is coarse-textured with longer grass blades that are thicker and wider. Floratam is the most used home lawn in all of Florida, and it adds values to the home for years to come. The greatest advantage of the Floratam when compared to the three St Augustine varieties is that it is resistant to the most frequent virus and pest problem of the St Augustine sods which is the SAD virus and the chinch bug. Floratam has simply plugged 2 or 3-foot centers into the existing lawn, and it will grow and crowd out the diseased grass over a period because there is no chemical control for SAD. Floratam is also brown patch and drought tolerant. However, the resistant of the Floratam reduces over the years, and there are now new types of chinch bugs that can attack the Floratam grass but can be treated with insecticide.

The Floratam sod grows swiftly summer and spring, but it is not cold resistant. The dark green cultivar lacks a real good cold tolerance there by it can suffer freeze damage when it stays freezing over an extensive period.

Floratam grass needs sunlight to survive. The Floratam St Augustine sod has a good shade tolerance and can survive in a little bit of shade. For the grass to grow at its optimum rate, it needs to receive more than six hours of sunlight on a daily because it does best in sunny areas.

Just like every other grass out here, it has to be mowed at least every once a week. The Floratam grows rapidly, and it grows even faster during the growing season. By this, it requires a minimum of four or five days minimum and seven days maximum then it has to be mowed. Because the grass is coarse-textured, the mowing height should be 1 2/2. However, in dry weather, the mowing machine should be increased to 2 or even higher.

As far as watering the Floratam sod is concerned, it is similar to the rest of the sods. It needs watering at least once per week during the budding season and once every two weeks during the winter period. If it is not raining frequently, the Floratam grass should be watered at least twice a week.

Top of the Line Sod

"I have bought pallets of sod in the past with other companies and to my surprise your pallet covered a lot more area for the same amount of money. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. I picked up the sod the same day, if that would make a difference, it was delivered to you and every piece from top to bottom was in great shape with no yellowing and uniform in shape. Thanks again!"
